Majestad Negra (‘Black Majesty’) is a socially conscious traditional bomba music group that simultaneously sustains Afro-Puerto Rican culture and bears the flag for cultural resistance on behalf of the town of Loíza, an ancestral region that is home to peoples of African descent. Bomba music and dances evolved through the cultural practices of millions of Africans kidnapped and enslaved at the time of the conquest and colonization of Puerto Rico.

Majestad Negra was born in 2001 and has been affiliated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture since 2004. The dancers are primarily girls and students. They have represented Puerto Rico in many different countries, exchanging musical ideas and experiences to raise awareness and build unity in the African diaspora across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Through its performances and advocacy, Majestad Negra has played an important role in resistance to population displacement and the ecological destruction of the mangrove forest in Piñones, which is one of the largest in the Caribbean.
