Nara Couto’s multifaceted artistry flows from a deep connection to Afro-Brazilian culture and ancestral roots. She began her artistic journey as a dancer, inspired by the vibrant beats of the legendary Afro group Ilê Aiyê. From age 17 to 23, she performed with Balé Folclórico da Bahia, sharing stages with icons like Gilberto Gil, Margareth Menezes, Ivete Sangalo, and Daniela Mercury.

Transitioning into music, Nara started as a backing vocalist for notable artists including Daniela Mercury and Mateus Aleluia. In 2009, she co-founded the Afrosinfônica Orchestra, where she contributed as a mezzo-soprano until 2018.

Her solo career took flight in 2017 with the release of “Linda e Preta,” a powerful anthem celebrating the beauty and strength of Black women in Brazil. Since then, Nara has released one EP, Contipurania (2018), and two full-length albums: Retinta (2022), supported by Natura Musical, and Ori (2024).

Ori — released to sold-out audiences at Sesc Pompéia — features the late maestro Letieres Leite as musical director and collaborations with Mateus Aleluia, Vovó Cici de Oxalá, Luedji Luna, and the Bloco Afro Ilê Ayê.

Nara continues to expand her artistic horizons through collaborations with a diverse range of artists, including Lazzo Matumbi, Mu Mbana (Guinea Bissau), Jéssica Areias and Ary (Angola), Otis Selimane (Mozambique), Ellen Oléria, Bia Ferreira, Paula Lima, Majur, and Hiran.

Her work is a vibrant fusion of music, movement, and ancestral storytelling — a celebration of identity, culture, and the enduring spirit of Afro-Brazilian heritage.
