Ernest Ikwanga is renowned for his very personal and unique guitar playing. He also composes, produces and is a sound engineer. He started his music journey whilst still at school in 2006, when he released his first solo album Love Your Neighbour. A year later, together with friends, Ernest created Mafilika, an afro-rock and reggae band. Their debut album Woloka Africa was released in 2009.
Ernest Ikwanga’s new afro-fusion jazz project Chisekese blends his Malawian cultural heritage with its roots in the rhythms of the traditional dances of Manganje, Ngoma, Vimbuza and Afro-Jazz dance beats.
Mafilika toured in the Netherlands in 2009 (as part of the Mundial Festival Tour). In 2010 they won the Fair Play Anti-Corruption international music competition and toured in Belgium. They regularly play at Malawi’s Lake Of Stars Festival. During 2014-2015 the group performed in Scotland and in China.
