The Carnival Parade is the largest street event of its kind in Zanzibar! It is a unique experience for performing artists, international visitors and the people of Zanzibar to be united in the celebration of music from the region.
In addition, we liaise with schools, NGOs and government institutions to ensure a cross-section of Zanzibar’s varied cultural life is represented in unity and in celebration.
In past years the parade has featured over twenty performing arts groups from Zanzibar, including: beni brass bands, ngoma drummers, sound systems, stilt-walkers acrobats, clowns, fire eaters, capoeira, Kilua and Mdundiko dancers, Mwanandege ‘umbrella ladies’, Maasai and Reki warriors and many other surprises. Put simply, there are people of all ages and a dizzying kaleidoscope of colours.
This is the one day of the year when even the Zanzibar police are smiling! Everyone is welcome to join in the fun, as we stop the traffic and rock the streets. Wear your smiles and make some noise!
