The Festival Venue
Ngome Kongwe, also known as the Old Fort, stands as a majestic testament to Zanzibar’s rich history and cultural significance. This iconic fortress, with its imposing coral stone walls and commanding views of the Indian Ocean, embodies centuries of trade, conquest, and resilience.
Originally built by the Oman Arabs in the 17th century to protect the Island’s valuable trade routes, Ngome Kongwe later served as a stronghold for various powers, including the Portuguese and British. Its strategic location in Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar, symbolizes the Island’s role as a hub of East African trade and Cultural exchange.
In recognition of its outstanding universal value, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. This designation honors its architectural significance and its role in preserving the cultural heritage of Zanzibar.
Over the past 22 years, Sauti za Busara has brought the historic Old Fort to life, Igniting its walls with the vibrant spirit of African music and culture. The fort’s precious courtyard and historic ambiance create a unique setting where artists from across the continent showcase their talents amidst the echoes of history. The festival’s choice of Ngome Kongwe as its venue not only celebrates African music but also honors Zanzibar’s cultural heritage, offering festival-goers an unforgettable experience where music, history, and community converge in harmony.
