Tiken Jah Fakoly creates and performs his music to raise consciousness. He sings in French, English, Dioula and Bambara. His lyrics speak of the injustices suffered by the people of his country and of the wider African Continent. His calls are for African unity and economic, political and cultural resurgence. People of all races feel a deep affinity with his music and with the powerful messages he never fails to deliver.
Tiken Jah Fakoly was born in the north-west of Côte d'Ivoire, in 1968. He discovered reggae at an early age, assembling his first group, Djelys, in 1987. With the rise in political instability and xenophobia in Côte d'Ivoire and after receiving death threats due to his lyrics, he has lived in exile in Bamako, Mali since 2003.
When asked where his unwavering energy comes from, he answers straight up: “Activism! Activism gives me the strength to keep on fighting.” He continues, “the path to democracy in a country like France has been a long and winding road. As for me, I still believe in Africa’s great and global awakening.”
Always unstoppable in his groove and pertinent in his lyrics, Tiken Jah’s latest release ‘Braquage de Pouvoir’ was recorded between Abidjan, Bamako and Paris and released in November 2022.
