From Tanga, on the Indian Ocean coastline, Patricia Hillary is among Tanzania’s taarab icons. She is also a singer-songwriter, actress, business woman and retired sergeant from JKT (Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa). She began her music journey through the famous traditional dances of mdumange. She started shining in the taarab scene in the 1980s, shortly after completing her university education when she joined JKT, one of the first bands to perform taarab music on the Tanzania mainland. Njiwa Peleka Salamu, Mapenzi Yananitatiza, Ni Mdodo are just a few of her famous hits of the past 42 years. Her music is still massively popular across East Africa, for example her recent song "Maroporopo".
